Virtual Magic Sheet from West Side Systems. is an application for Mac and Windows which displays live lighting control information in a visual layout that you design. Learn more about it here. VMS was named Lighting Tools and Software Product of the Year at LDI 2005, and has been used on Broadway, in the West End, at the MET Opera, on touring shows, and on regional and educational productions for ten years. But that’s just chapter one.

Chapter two: VMS is expanding into an open source project. It is being developed, promoted and supported by a community of designers and electricians, coders and testers, users and friends who are passionate about its promise and about independent software tools.

We are always seeking talented collaborators who are interested in helping with a range of tasks. Developing the software is only one part of the project. Manuals, tutorials and videos need to be created. Meetings need to be hosted. User groups need to be organized. Social media needs to be fed. Connections to schools and manufacturers need to be nurtured. Funds need to be raised. And more.

If you have a skill to offer or just an interest to share, welcome to the VMS Project. Visit the discussion forums to browse through the questions and ideas that have been floated there, and add your own. Collecting ideas will be an ongoing process as lighting, controls, personal computer technology, and VMS evolve together.

Soon we’ll be adding more elements to this site to begin the actual work. Jump in now, and check back frequently.
